Book Club FAQ's

How often does Book Club meet?
This is only our second book club, and we originally planned to meet just once a semester, but it has proved so popular we are planning to move it to once a term, so it will be four times a year.

Where can we find the books?
The UWA Co-op Bookstore is our preferred retailer- they are very supportive and have Manthropology in stock. However, if you'd prefer not to buy we normally have a few copies floating around the group that you can arrange to borrow.

How are the meetings organised?
The meetings are very conversational; everyone is invited to discuss what they thought of the book. There is a chairperson, whose responsibility it is to maintain order, but they have an easy job since it is a friendly group. There are drinks and nibbles available throughout the meeting and time for socialising afterward.

The meeting dates are arranged by the seminar co-ordinator, but the books are chosen by the group, at the end of the previous meeting. So after we discuss Manthropology we'll decide the next book to read; it's a good idea to have some suggestions in mind.

Who can join?
Everyone is welcome! Bring a friend! It's totally free and we don't even mind if you haven't actually read the book.

Remember, the next book club is from 4-5pm on Friday the 16th of April, 2010 and we will be discussing Manthropology by Peter McAllister. See you there!

Perth Hot Air revisited...

Videos taken at the Perth Hot Air Symposium on communicating the science of climate change are now available for public viewing via YouTube.

Speakers include Dr Carmen Lawrence, Tim Thwaites, Jenni Metcalfe, and Dr Graeme Pearman - see full program for details.

The event, held in March this year, was organised by the Australian Science Communicators Association and was the first of a three symposia series. The next two will be held in Brisbane (August 16-21) and Canberra (October/November).

Science Programs Officer - Full Time
Present and coordinate science activities, programs and shows to meet Scitech's mission and educational objectives for visitors. You will be able to demonstrate excellence in: written and verbal communication, customer service, organisational ability, and presenting to groups.

Job Title: Biodiversity and Fisheries Aid Work
Employer: Crawford Fund
Job Description:
Still after some candidates for the following placements under AusAID's
Australian Youth Ambassadors for Development (AYAD) program, which places
skilled young Australians (18-30) on short-term assignments in developing
countries in the Asia Pacific region.

The Crawford Fund acts as Australian Partner Organisation for placements in
some communication/journalism positions. I need to try to tie these up by 8 May and
successful candidates would need to be available to move to the Philippines
in October. Both organisations are housed at the university town of Los Banos - very
well resources and picturesque!

One position is with Bioversity International (BI) the world's largest
international research organisation dedicated solely to the conservation and
use of agricultural biodiversity. It is non-profit and independently
operated. The position is related to the UN 2010 International Year of
Biodiversity and aims to raise awareness of the value of agricultural
biodiversity for nutrition, health and livelihoods. Would be very exciting
to be part of this key campaign for the UN IYB.

The second position is with WorldFish Centre - an international, non-profit,
non-governmental organisation with a mission to reduce poverty and hunger by
improving fisheries and aquaculture. This successful applicant is needed to
develop articles about projects for newsletters; develop training manuals
and materials that could be used to promote marine protected area management
effectiveness; and prepare project briefs and policy recommendations from
results of ongoing and completed projects that could be widely disseminated
to partner institutions and policy makers.

Hot Air: Communicating the Science of Climate Change

Hot Air, a symposium on the science of communication of climate change was held today in Perth. The event was organised by the Australian Science Communicators Association and was enthusiastically attended (and partly facilitated) by staff and students from UWA.

Videos of the event have only been made available to guest account holders for now (sorry!). Guest account holders can view these by logging into YouTube with their account details.

Were any animals attracted to the whistle? Did the environment suit protect you from the harmful rays? (okay, maybe not that one). If not, why not?
